Your Ensemble Experience begins with highlights of Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia. Founded in 1749 to protect British interests in North America, Halifax is steeped in maritime history.
Departing from the pier, you’ll drive past St Paul’s Church—Canada’s oldest Anglican Church, City Hall, the Old Town Clock built in 1803 to keep the garrison punctual, and Province House.
You’ll continue to the Halifax Citadel. The British began construction on this fortress in 1858 to protect the city and one of the main ports of entry into British North America. The hilltop location offers a panoramic view of the harbor and the city.
Next you’ll visit The SS Atlantic Heritage Park near the site of the wreck of the SS Atlantic. Hear stories of how communities tried to save the passengers after the crew left them to fend for themselves.
After some light refreshments, you’ll drive along Lighthouse Route to Peggy’s Cove through the small fishing village of West Dover for a taste of what’s to come.
Along the way, admire the Devonian Granite Rock Formations. These huge 350- to 415-million-year-old boulders scattered by retreating glaciers during the last ice age appear to be growing out of the fields of moss and shrubs.
Once at Peggy’s Cove, you can visit famed marine artist William E. DeGarthe’s 100-foot sculpted granite monument and see two murals located in the Anglican Church.
The picturesque village of Peggy’s Cove, settled in 1811 by six families, now has a year-round population of 60 but thousands of tourists visit the Cove every season.
You’ll enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in Peggy’s Cove before returning to your ship.
